Scientific work
Although Dr Olesen has mainly been clinically employed he authored 145 peer-reviewed articles, 5 book chapters and has an H-index of 27. He defended his Ph.D. thesis entitled “Pain and chronic pancreatitis: clinical and experimental findings” at Aarhus University in 2011. He is expert in pancreatology, gastroenterology, pharmacology and visceral pain. He is a frequent speaker and chairman at international congresses and has presented about 75 abstracts at national and international meetings. His primary research interests are acute and chronic pancreatitis, gastrointestinal pain and physiology, pharmacology and imaging.

Supervisor duties, teaching and GCP
Since 2008 he has participated in teaching of medical students and in 2021 he was appointed Professor at Clinical Institute, Aalborg University Hospital and responsible for teaching of medical students at Department of Gastroenterology & Hepatology. He also teaches at specialist courses within gastroenterology and at Ph.D. courses. Currently her is supervisor for three Ph.D. students enrolled at Aalborg University.
