The clinical group applies experimental pain models on different patient groups. Both basic studies and drug studies are being conducted.

Previous studies:
This group has examined sensitivity and central pain processing in patients with the following diseases:

  •  Erosive gastro-esophageal reflux
  •  Non-erosive gastro-esophageal reflux
  •  Non-cardiac chest pain
  •  Chronic pancreatitis
  •  Ulcerative colitis
  •  Eosinophilic esophagitis
  •  Hepatic encephalopathy

Ongoing research:

  •  Barrett’s esophagus – sensitivity, acid clearance and motility
  •  Chronic pancreatitis – effect of pregabalin on pain, central pain processing
  •  Non-cardiac chest pain – sensitivity and central pain processing

Staff:
The staff working in the clinical group consists of nurses and medical doctors working as PhD fellows or post docs. Medical students are often employed on specific projects.

Main technology used:
  •  multimodal oesophageal and rectal setups
  •  1-128 channel EEG recordings
  •  somatic pain models: heat, deep pressure pain and electricity

Collaborators:

  •  Aarhus University Hospital, Denmark
  •  Sahlgrenska University Hospital, Sweden
  •  Barts and The London School of Medicine and Dentistry, Queen Mary University, United Kingdom
  •  Catholic University of Leuven, Belgium
