Background

The Mech-Sense center was founded in 2003 by professor Hans Gregersen and professor Asbjørn Drewes and was initially named the Center for Visceral Biomechanics and Pain. It was the first of its kind in visceral biomechanics and pain research.

The center evolved from research work done primarily at Aarhus University Hospital, Aalborg University, Aalborg Hospital, Bergen University, and University of California, San Diego. From being a small center with few students, it has now become a truly multidisciplinary center with more than 30 scientists and students. The R&D work is done by scientists allocated into several teams, each with excellent lab facilities.

The main focus is on gastrointestinal mechanical and sensory function, though studies are also being conducted on other organs (heart, blood vessels, kidney, urethra, and the ear drum).
